The Lost Piece of Gold

The Lost Piece of Gold

I was waiting at the bus stop when a little child in rags approached me and asked me to read out a letter she was holding in her hands. First thing I noticed was the number of scars on her hands. One of them seemed to be fresh, as red as ruby. She also had a pretty little face. I took the letter and opened it cautiously.

It had a very fancy font. It read, ‘Mary Elizabeth, the daughter of the richest man in town is lost for the last 3 years. She was 10 when she left and so, she is 13 now. If you find her, the very heart of her parents, you can get $1,000,000.’ The photo of a very beautiful girl with neat braids and perfect make-up was attached below the text. While reading the letter, I completely forgot about my bus that I had missed two minutes ago.

I was foolish at that moment, but a million dollars seemed very tempting. I took hold of the little girl’s hand and set off to look for Mary. Half the day had already passed, but no sign of Mary, and no chance of a million dollars either. Then I looked at the poor girl’s beautiful face again. Something struck me. The little girl had been Mary all along. She then told she couldn’t read because she had no practice in the last three years. I realized immediately that God had chosen me as the good Samaritan to assist this little child reunite with her parents.
